Letter from Eric Stone to all
Illinois lifters reguarding the IL State
Meet as well as some issues facing APF-Illinois:
January
1, 2009:
Dear
Illinois Lifters,
I would like to formally invite all of you to the 2009 Illinois State Championships on March 14-15 at Velocity Sports in Willowbrook, IL. I have enclosed the official entry form. A couple of issues of note: The schedule is different from previous years. On Saturday, all bench only lifters will compete, and all heavy-weight powerlifters (242 lb weight class and above. All women powerlifters and lightweight powerlifters (220 lbs and below) will compete on Sunday. I changed the schedule to better fit with my ability to schedule staff for the event as well to better fit the schedule of my host facility. Also note that there is no pre-order form for t-shirts. T-shirts will be available at the competition, on both days, and will be totally customizable. Also, although not listed on the entry form, we will be once again be awarding the 2009 APF-Illinois Lifters of the Year on Saturday March 14, following the competition, as well as awarding the 2009 APF-Illinois Hall of Fame Inductee. In addition, along-side the regular Best Lifter awards of the competition, the top female powerlifter, top APF male powerlifter and top AAPF male powerlifter will be awarded a free entry to an APF/AAPF National Meet of their choosing, courtesy of APF-Illinois. I am also looking for some feedback from you, the lifters of APF-Illinois, on a couple of issues. First, myself and the other meet directors in Illinois and throughout the APF have been discussing the issue of scoring at meets. We have traditionally awarded 1st-3rd places in all weight classes and age divisions. The problem with structuring your scoring in this fashion is that at a local or state meet, there is traditionally not to be a great deal of head to head competition outside of the men’s open weight classes. What other states have done, and what Amy Jackson did in her recent Rise of the Deadlift competition was to still award placements via the weight classes in the men’s open division. In the women’s division, and in all of the men’s age divisions, all weight classes are scored together via coefficient. Florida APF, probably one of the biggest states for the APF, uses this system. Under this structure, all lifters lifting in a particular division (i.e. teenage 18-19, masters 45-49, women’s, etc.), no matter the weight class, would compete against each other via the coefficient. In this way, more head to head competition is introduced into the meet. Also because there would be fewer divisions to give awards, we could likely give more quality awards for 1st places, and even go deeper into the placements, down to 5th place or so. The 2009 Illinois State Meet will use the traditional system of scoring we have almost always used. However, I am looking for feedback from you, lifters, on whether you would be in favor of a change in future meets that would introduce more competition and allow for a bit better quality of awards. In addition to the issue of scoring, I would also like your feedback on running raw meets in Illinois. Recently, the APF board has approved a raw division, with raw records having been formed, and is even looking to hold raw Nationals and Worlds. For similar reasons to those discussed above regarding lack of competition, I would personally not be favor of adding yet another layer of competition to the already existing meets. I would much rather see a raw-only competition separate from our other meets. I am looking to see if you lifters would be interested in participating in a raw competition here in Illinois. If there is enough interest, I will look to promote such a meet myself, or look to find a meet director to promote it, likely in the fall of 2009. If you would like your voice heard on these two issues, or have any questions, please email me at thestone@chicagopowerlifting.com. Thank you for your continued support of APF-Illinois. |
Rise
of the Deadlift & Beast of the Bench Press
The RISE OF THE DEADLIFT returned on October 18, 2008, and added a BEAST OF THE BENCH PRESS section to the lift. Over 50 lifters came out to Velocity Sports in Willowbrook to test their bench and deadlift bests. Thanks to Amy Jackson and Maris Sternberg for promoting this contest, and giving IL State Chairman Eric Stone a break from running meets. In the team results, Zenzen Barbell once again took 1st place at this meet, Team Stone took 2nd, and Wisconsin Barbell took 3rd. It was another great competition, but a friendly one between all the teams that will be hopefully renewed at the 2009 Illinois State Championships. Meet Results |

Drawing lifters from all over the mid-west and the country, the meet featured from record-breaking bench presses from some Big Iron Gym lifters among other great lifts. Thanks especially to Amy Jackson for introducing her new scoring program. It was a great addition to the meet, proving the lifters with a constantly updated scoresheet of all the lifters and their lifts. It also provides each lift in kilos and pounds as our previous program had listed. It was a big hit with all the lifters, and we hope to see it in use all most of the future APF-Illinois meets. Thanks as well to Jackie Stone for her great announcing, all the judges, all the spotters/loaders, and the members of Team Stone that gave their assistance in running the meet. Rise of the Deadlift Results ***PICTURES!!! Photographs of the Rise of the Deadlift were taken by expert photographer Sidney Thoms. To purchase a CD of the photos of the meet, contact Sidney via email at sidalt@sbcglobal.net. A big THANKS goes out to Sidney for her service to APF Illinois for taking photos of the meet. On October 20, 2007, APF Illinois held its first ever deadlift only competition, the APF/AAPF RISE OF THE DEADLIFT at Velocity Sports in Willowbrook, IL. Over 30 lifters came out for the Halloween-themed meet, including groups of lifters from Zenzen Barbell, the Arroyo Power Team, Team Stone, and Lance's Gym. The best deadlifters of the meet were Husain Abdulaziz for the AAPF, Ernie Lilliebridge, Sr. for the APF, and Lynn Brault for the women. Abdulaziz pulled a BIG 715 lbs at 220 lbs in only his second competition, lifting for Pete Arroyo's team. Lifting with Zenzen Barbell, the elder of the Lilliebridge family pulled 735 lbs at 308 lbs. "Senior" just missed a big 805 lbs twice--we will likely see him pull the big "8" in a meet very soon. Lynn Brault, alumnus member of Illini Powerlifting, pulled an impressive 330 lbs at 148 lbs, besting her pull by over 100 lbs from last June! A number of first-time lifters participated in the event. Weighing in at a light 159 lbs in the 165 Junior class, Justin Sepe of Team Stone pulled a PR of 480 lbs. Jennifer Gimmel of the Arroyo team pulled an easy 240 lbs in her first meet as well. Young Joe DiMaggio, Jr. made his father proud with a 335 lb pull as a 165 lb teenager. Also from the Arroyo team, new lifter Tom Jacobs pulled 630 lbs as a 220 lb Junior. Recently having served in Iraq with the US Air Force, Ashley Bryant came over from her new current assignment in Ohio to pull a meet PR of 300 lbs as a 148 lb Junior. Fourty-six year old Bruce McCord of Zenzen Barbell went 3 for 3 on the day, pulling 565 lbs. All in all, there were no bomb-outs on the day (perhaps a first for APF Illinois meets?), and a ton of great pulling took place. Meet director Eric Stone, for maybe the first and last time, competed in his own meet, and left running the meet to wife Jackie and Maris Sternberg--many thanks to both of them. Fair and consistent judging was lead by head judge Tracy Frein, and aided by side judges Eric Maroscher and Keith Early. Jon Smoker, as usual provided some great awards for the lifters, and some great t-shirts were available from Serge Ceralde of Absolute Power. More thanks goes to loaders Jordan Evans, Garry Parquette, and Ed Czerwin, as well as scoreboard operator Steve Weiglos. Also thanks goes to Steve for bringing this deadlift bar for use in the warm-up area, and to Dick Zenzen for doing the same. And thanks as usual to Dale Deastch and Velocity Sports for hosting the event. Official Results: HTML Format PDF File |
Statement of Record As APF Illinois State Chairman, I would to state, for the record, that I am 100% committed to remaining with the American Powerlifting Federation. Despite some recent happenings with some new organizations forming, I am remaining solid with the APF/AAPF as the Illinois State Chairman. As I have done since I started in this sport as a teenager, I will always support powerlifting as a whole, across federation lines. I have judged in a number of different organizations, and plan on continuing to do so. I have a number of friends in powerlifting and have been or are now associated with another organization. I pride myself on my good relationship with other organization IL state chairmen, as well as some from surrouding states. Please do not confuse these relationships as non-support for the APF/AAPF. Rather, I feel a good relationship with other organizations can only bolster APF Illinois' reputation in the area, and, in the end, benefits our meets and our organization as a whole. My multi-federational website ChicagoPowerlifting.com has always supported POWERLIFTING in all of its forms and will continue to do so, as will I personally. Outside of a few possible changes in the membership of the APF Illinois Executive Committee (which is inevitbable and likely necessary with any commmittee), APF Illinois will be remaining the same. I regret that some individuals have left the APF, and disagree with their decision, I do respect their decisions to do so. I acknowledge that some problems do exist in the APF/WPC, but would contend that most of the complaints should directed more towards the WPO. While the APF and WPO are interconnected, they are NOT one in the same. The great state chairman and meet directors of the APF are what makes it the organization it is. Organizations are build from the grassroots level up, and that is what has made the APF the great organization it is for the past 25+ years. Some mistakes has admittedly been made as of late, but some of the happenings were out of the control of the officials of the organization. I will continue to support the APF/WPC, as well as the WPO. The issues in the WPO are being dealt with, and I believe it will contine to be the premire professional powerlifting organization, a goal for the top lifters of the APF and WPC lifter to strive for. I plan on remaining as the APF Illinois State Chairman for years to come. Myself and my wife Jackie Stone will be running the 2008 APF/AAPF Illinois State Championships in March of next year. It will take place at Velocity Sports in Willowbrook, IL. It will remain as the premire powerlifting competition in the State of Illinois. I would like to extend an invitation for anyone in Illinois who is interested in becoming more involved in APF Illinois. I am always seeking new certified judges for my meets. I will personally pay your processing fee to the organization. It is often a thankless job, but it is rewarding to give back to the organzation. I am also actively seeking other meet directors in Illinois. I personally simply cannot run as many meets as the state could likely support. For example, I will not be running the Illinois Record Breakers meet this year, despite last year's success. I know it could be a success meet, but I simply do not have the energy or time to put into another meet. The state could also support a couple of smaller bench only or push/pull meets throughout the year. If you are at all interesting in becomeing more involved, please contact me directly. I will help you through anything you are willing to do. Thank you for your continued support of APF Illinois. Please feel free to contact me on any of this issues at thestone@chicagopowerlifting.com or at (630) 794-0594. Eric Stone APF Illinois State Chairman |

Results On November 11, 2006, APF
Illinois held the first APF/AAPF Illinois Record Breakers meet.
We had a number of great lifts performed, and had a number of records
broken. Rob Luyando hit an 800 lb bench press at a 220 lb
bodyweight, an APF and all-time record (at the time, Rob has since
re-broken it). It was a new concept for a meet for APF Illinois,
and turned out to be a successful one with over 50 lifters. APF

| New APF Illinois State Chairman is
Eric Stone To all APF Illinois lifters: Maris Sternberg, as her final act at APF Illinois State Chairman, has appointed me, Eric Stone, as the new chairman. Effective today, June 20, 2006, I will be taking over all the duties associated with being the Illinois State Chairman. The main two jobs will be a) sanctioning the Illinois State Championship and all other Illinois APF meets, and b) keeping track of the Illinois State Records, which will now be kept on APF-Illinois.com. I will be keeping the Executive Board in tact just as it is currently. At this point, I am not sure if Maris is going to stay on in any capacity. But I believe all the other members of the board will remain basically the same. I am not sure at this point how I will fill the secretary position that I previously held One thing I want to do as State Chairman is have the meets for the next year set further in advance so lifters can plan for the meets better. With that in mind, check out the Meet page of this website for the proposed meet schedule for the rest of this year and next. Thanks for your support, and I look forward to serving all of the lifters of Illinois. -Eric Stone |
